Hey! Glad you could make it! Grab some chips and have a seat on the couch -- the movie’s about to begin.

3... 2... 1...

Welcome to the Mutant Reviewers From Hell! Founded in 1997 by bored college students with a lack of proper grammar fundamentals, MRFH was the web page we had been trying to find for years. Anyone can critique a film. Anyone can pander to the crowd. But we wanted to talk about the offbeat, odd films that we found fascinating. We wanted a forum where it was okay to disagree with the large majority of critics and audiences. We wanted to share our love of weird movies, to yammer about them loudly and with much theatrical hysteria. We wanted to make a site where it was as much fun to read as it was to write.

In short, we were sick of the stainless, emotionless corporate skyscrapers of most movie critics. Instead, we preferred to hunker down in our friends’ basements, talking about films the way we talk about them in real life. We may disagree, we may argue, but it’s always in a friendly, fun sort of way.

At the core of MRFH is the cult film — the runt reject of the masses given a new home in the feverish love of true movie fans. This site grew out of our passion for such cult flicks like Army of Darkness, Clerks and PCU, giving voice to the underdogs of the cinematic world. Since our philosophy is to talk about the movies that interest us, today, we haven’t strictly adhered to a "cult-only" format… but instead, you’ll find that MRFH’s staff enjoys a diverse and eclectic array of movie tastes that are bound to fit your own.

Maybe we’re the best-kept secret on the web — we’re not hugely popular, but those that visit us tend to love MRFH as much as we the staff do. We’ve worked really hard to build up an enormous load of content: hundreds of movies and reviews, dozens of features and articles, and our friendly forum community, where "Troll" is just the name of a bad movie.

We Mutant Reviewers aren’t perfect or all-knowing. You’ll disagree with us, probably quite often, but that’s okay as long as you are entertained and share an overall love of these orphan films with us. We’ve tried to make a site that’s useful to you to give you multiple perspectives on a film and help you search out the kind of movie you’re in the mood for.

Enjoy your stay at MRFH! We sincerely hope it’s the first of many visits.

Your Mutant Reviewer staff,

Justin, PoolMan, Kyle, Lissa, Sue, Drew, Nancy and Shalen

Exploring Mutant Reviewers From Hell (a basic tour guide)

Wondering where to begin on MRFH? It's not too complicated, but here's what we suggest:

  • The MRFH front page shows all the latest reviews, features, and polls... in addition to our cool random quote generator, daily calendar, and other essential contact information. This is the page to bookmark for future reference!

  • You might want to swing over to the Mutant Bios page to read up on your MRFH staff. Here we list basic biographical info, post our pictures, and relate our favoritist flicks.

  • Then, time to jump into reading reviews! You have three options: check out the lastest reviews posted (on the front page), scan through all of the movie's we've reviewed alphabetically on our "Reviews" page, or search for a type of film with our patented (not really) Findaflik system.

  • Next up, you'll definitely want to go through our wild and wooly Features! page, where we list every article, game, graphic and "etcetera" piece we've done for the site. We especially recommend the Annual Mutant Awards (our yearly award show) and the Mutant Viewings for starters.

  • The MRFH Forum is a terrific place to sound off about movies, music, games and weirdness in general — we invite you to join our community and dip right into the fun!

  • There's other things for you to see on the site, but we'll leave it to you to explore the menu options on the front page and see what they are.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When and how did MRFH begin?

MRFH began in early 1997 by Justin (then attending a PA college) and Kym (living in TX), both who had bonded over the internet through their strange tastes in movies. The earliest version of the site was on a grey background, featured MIDI tunes, and strictly stuck to a "no review should be over a paragraph long" policy (all of which have been abandoned, thankfully). From the beginning, MRFH was intended to be a "counterpoint" site, where you could read two reviews of the same movie to get a better opinion.

Is Kym dead? What happened to her involvement with MRFH?

About a year after MRFH began, Kym became increasingly busy with her daily life and had to drop out of writing for the site. To give her a memorable send-off, Justin posted Kym's Memorial Page in early '99, causing many readers to wonder if she was actually dead. She is not. Kym still visits MRFH regularly and is proud how the site has grown. After Kym's "death", Justin began hiring a full staff of writers (hiring is a loose term for an unpaid person, but their bitterness is kept under control) to expand the site.

What about the other writers — Clare, Andie, etc.? And what's the "Curse of MRFH"?

Many of our writers took leave of the site after a tour of duty, often citing a busy life that was taking up too much time. You can learn about our previous writing staff (DnaError, Kym, toni, Andie, Clare, Bobby, Alex and Rich) by checking out the "Mutant Retirement Home" at the bottom of the Mutant Bios page, or by reading their reviews. The fabled Curse of MRFH is that some of our writers have simply dropped off the map, completely, with no further communication or hints as to where they may be. We're working on a theory it's either alien abductions or marriage.

Why the name? And how do you pronounce "MRFH"?

Despite satanic accusations by some, Mutant Reviewers From Hell is actually an homage to the old B-movie titles of sci-fi long since gone. The original title of the site was "Revenge of the Mutant Movie Reviewers From Hell VIII", but was shortened within the first year to MRFH. Which is pronounced, by the way, as "Murph" (rhymes with "Smurf").

How often do you update the site?

Currently, we try to update MRFH seven times a week (typically four new reviews and two new articles).

Why don't you use a four- or five-star rating system for movie reviews? Or something similar?

Numbered or digit-related rating systems are a crutch that far too many critics use, which has (in our opinion) dumbed down the content of reviews for the public. Not to mention that there are many difficulties with trying to reduce a film to a mere number for comparison purposes. Thus, we've never had them at MRFH. The Mutant Meter just rates certain aspects of a film (but not whether it's "good" or "bad"), and we've always used the "Rating" part of our reviews as a joke-whatever line.

Has any of the Mutant Staff met in real life?

Absolutely! We've had many adventures together — we call those "Mutant Summits", and you can read up on them on the Features! page.

What is the worst movie ever made?

No contest. The Doom Generation. It's stupid, bad, foul, and disgusting. Our staff unanimously agrees. There are other top contenders as well, and we've listed the worst of the worst here.

Are you accepting applications for new staff members?

If we are, we'll post a notice on the front page. Most of the time we aren't, simply because we're trying to keep our staff around 6-8 people.

I want to recommend a movie for you guys to review! How do I do it?

Go on the forums to the folder called "The List". Here is a giant list of recommended movie titles for MRFH to review. The entire staff reads this and does rent these titles. However, there is not guarantee as to whether we'll see it or review it; that's up to each staff member to decide for him/herself.

Why do the review pages look different from each other?

Hey, you're not supposed to notice that! It's simply because the review page has been slowly evolving over the past decade, and many reviews are still in our older review formats. We're trying to gradually update all review pages to the latest version, but that will take a while.

Hey, will you guys help me write a term paper I'm doing about movies?

No. We're not here to do your homework. And if you quote MRFH, you better use proper footnotes.
