Fan Favorites & Links

We asked the MRFH staff and readers to give us their favorite MST3K episode, character, quote and host. They naturally spit in our faces and left, so we made the rest of this up.

Just kidding.

What's your favorite MST3K episode, and why?

Shalen: Cave Dwellers. No contest. I'm not sure if that was ever an episode or if it was only released on vhs, but it's an absolute favorite with me and with Sibs 1 and 2 (Gunslinger being the next up). We still quote lines from this while watching other movies.

Macaroni & Death: 601 - Girls Town. I love the old juvenile delinquent movies, and this one is ridiculous, trashy, and star-studded. Honorable mention 908 - The Touch of Satan. I can't really justify this one, as nothing really happens in the movie, but it never fails to crack me up. Walnut farms and evil dehydrated grandma.

Kyle: Absolutely no contest: Mitchell! I loved many other episodes, but the consistent hilarity of the Mitchell episode blows my mind. I can still remember turning it on while I was lying on the couch way back when it was a new episode, not really knowing it was Joel's last, and just being unable to do anything but laugh. Brilliant!

Al: Mitchell. You guys watch Joe Don Baker movies? I know that, in some circles, Mitchell is as cliche an answer as you will get to that question, but it's darn funny. It has both Joel *and* Mike, AND introduced the masses to the delightfully named snack food 'hamdingers.' And any movie with a 'wacka-chooka' is alright by me... wacka-chooka wacka-chooka wacka-chooka wacka-chooka

Nancy: Close tie between Mitchell and The Final Sacrifice, but I'm gonna go with the latter, just becuase it was my first and Kyle already covered Mitchell pretty intensely.

Erinelizabeth: I really like Teen-Age Strangler and Eegah! Werewolf is great too, especially the ending credits. They kill me.

Justin: Cave Dwellers, with Manos and the shorts somewhere not too far behind. I once showed a friend this episode, and I laughed to hard watching it (that being my tenth time doing so), I nearly puked.

Baalek: It's a tie between Diabolik and Future War.

Aargmematey: Probably "The Dead Talk Back." It is hard to choose just one, but that one made me crack up even when feeling under the weather. Plus it has a hilarious short as well, although my favorite short would have to be "A Case Of Spring Fever."

Famousmortimer: "Red Zone Cuba". I've seen some bad films, but by the heavens that took the biscuit.

Eatmyshorts: Time Chasers. Wow, it was hillariously bad, and that big chinned guy was oh too funny.

What's your favorite MST3K character, and why?

Shalen: Tom Servo, because he was always the more viciously sarcastic one with the great song quotes. Plus he's bitter about his little useless arms, and that always cracks me up.

Macaroni & Death: I know this is controversial among fans, but I think Pearl really brought a lot to the table. The host segments always tended to be a little iffy, and some of them were downright embarassing, but when Pearl showed up not only was she a stronger character to build around, but she added some much needed estrogen to the show that Gypsy just wasn't providing.

Kyle: Joel. We both share a monotone and largely-skewed outlook, and often (against both our wills) end up dressed in shades of maroon. Laid back persona + sardonic dry wit = Joel's guide to life, followed closely by one Kyle M.

Al: Gypsy. She never gets any love since she doesn't actually review the movies, but on repeated viewings I tend to fnd her stuff funnier than Tom and Crow.

Nancy: Mike, because his simple-doofus smile and geniune good guy demeanor make me smile constantly, even if he's not the wittiest of the bunch.

Erinelizabeth: Hmmm, I think I'll have to go with Tom Servo, I guess. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't seem to have strong feelings here.

Justin: I think Tom Servo, for many reasons. He's wordy (loquacious), he loves to sing loudly about everything (as do I), and his voice has this supreme majesty that makes everything he says funnier for it.

Baalek: I gotta go with Crow. Yeah, Tom says funnier stuff a lot of the time, but sometimes Crow's "acting stupid" routine can put me on the floor.

Aargmematey: I'm going to go with Crow. I'm not entirely sure why. I am amused by his quips, and he is the most recognizable to me.

Famousmortimer: Crow.

Eatmyshorts: I'm not sure... I don't really like anyone besides Tom, Crow, and Mike. I usually fast forward the in-between movie bits... they are really stupid.

Joel era or Mike era?

Shalen: Joel. I like Brain a lot, but still. Much as I hate to say this, the good Dr. was way better than Pearl.

Macaroni & Death: Mike, all the way. Joel was just a little too droll, and his humor was pretty outdated a lot of the time.

Kyle: Joel era. The Mike era had unfamiliar voices, which immediately put me on the defensive, and the film selection was slightly off-putting. Most importantly, though, the humor of the Mike era was just too blatantly obvious and seemed to depend more upon lengthy diatribes than quick and natural witticisms. See: the first volume of 'MST3K: Shorts' for an excellent example of the superior Joel era versus the wishy-washy Mike era.

Al: Joel. He is rather droll, but I think he looked less awkward than Mike on a lot of the in-between segments. And Joel can sing; watching Mike try and do that was pretty painful.

Nancy: Mike era. Sweet persona + wit rivalved by robots = everything Nancy is a fan of.

Erinelizabeth: Mike is my favorite - Joel just falls flat for me sometimes and I prefer Mike's delivery.

Justin: Mike, baby. Joel was cool, but the inventions weren't that great, and I felt more at home with Mike. Plus, many of my favorite episodes came during Mike's stay in the SOL.

Baalek: Mike. Although this might be because I've seen a lot more episodes with Mike than with Joel.

Aargmematey: Mike Era, but I'm biased because I've only seen a few Joel episodes.

Famousmortimer: Mike era. I think the show was a lot warmer with him in the main role, and he was a bit funnier too. Still, it's like comparing the Beatles to the Stones - they're both brilliant.

Eatmyshorts: Mike. I too thought he was a lot warmer and a lot funnier.

What's your favorite MST3K quote?

Shalen: Numerous episodes: "I'm filled with shame." This is a great running joke that you can use in a film any time anyone in the background or foreground hangs his/her head and looks depressed. Closely followed by this exchange from Cave Dwellers: (Several samurai-like characters appear on screen) "Hey, they've wandered into a Kurasawa film!" "So it's gonna start making sense?"

Macaroni & Death: I'm trying to think of one, but so much of what they say depends so heavily on context. I can remember a few catchphrases from within the actual movies themselves, but nothing outstanding.

Kyle: In my adored 'Mitchell' episode there are literally tons of quotes I'd like to choose here; ranging from the "Mitchell! Miller! Mitchell!" car chase to mitchell's break-in of John Saxon's residence (the "Oh, whoa, is that a beer?" and "Pain in my chest! My hair's tingling!" lines got so much play between me, my spirtual brother ray, and the rest of the FRCC crew [I brought the episode in once and "borrowed" a television so we could watch it] that we used it for communication AND we deserve MST3K royalties). But the ULTIMATE is from one of the Hercules episodes, where Hercules smashed some dude's throne and Crow's response to "That was a gift from the prince of Persia" is: "Now, it's garbage!" Genius!

Al: A three-way tie. On one hand, my friends and I can call out "Did I tell you my tires are filled with water?" (Eegah!) during a drive and immediately laugh 'til me cry even though we haven't watched that movie in years. On the other, my brother and I are able to keep ourselves entertained for hours exclaiming "Big knees!" (Manos: The Hands of Fate), in reference to Tom Servo trying desperately to comprehend the deformity that makes Torgo a monster. And lastly, I can no longer listen to The Allman Brothers "Take It Easy" without changing the lyrics to 'I'm a-running down the road, trying to loosen my load // I've got Coleman Francis on my mind." (Red Zone Cuba) So that one stuck with me pretty well, too.

Nancy: In the Final Sacrifice, where Rozdower (spelling, anyone?) gives the kid a knife to saw through the rope binding him and Crow chimes in with "I dropped it already", perfectly followed later by "I somehow swallowed it."

Erinelizabeth: In Space Mutiny, the "hero" shrieks out of nowhere, and they cry, "My purse!" My friends and I also like to use "Wowdiddy wow wow!" on each other.

Justin: MST3K: The Movie gets a lot of play between me and my friends. My favorite comes during the end credits, with an obscure joke that leads up to, "Eastman! He came out of the east to do battle with the AMAZING RANDO!"

Baalek: I've got several quotes I repeat frequently, but I think my favorite is either Crow's "Breach hull, all die, even had it underlined" from This Island Earth (also known as The Movie) or from Future War, "Monsters in your Hood!" (note that this line was actually IN the movie!).

Aargmematey: Dang, this is a really hard one. I don't really think I have one, I like too many, and most of my favorite lines are actually spoken in the movies ("Nooooo Sprrrriiiings!").

Famousmortimer: "Watch out for snakes!" From "Eegah!", a line spoken while the character's lips aren't moving. Crow, about ten times, inserts that line into random and inappropriate parts of the film. Absolutely brilliant. "You shove off!" from Red Zone Cuba comes a close second.

Eatmyshorts: From Girl in Gold Boots - "When sexy becomes annoying..."
