It's always a sad note when we have to say farewell to the faithful writers of Mutant Reviewers whenever it happens. Instead of quietly sweeping them under the rug, however, MRFH likes to make a big deal out of this person who's given tremendous amounts of time and effort to making this site more enjoyable for you.
As it became clear over the past few months, Nancy's newfound college life was growing incompatable to the amount of free time she didn't have to write for us. Or, in her own words:
Now is probably the time for me to be a big kid and admit that I have to resign. I feel terrible for stringing you guys along for so long, but it was so important for me not to give up and to get my act together and keep writing about Batman.
But I find, I guess, that I'm just ina time in my life where there is only so much that I can say about Batman, and that it's hard for me to nestle out an hour or so to really rack my brain. And I'm in a writing slump, in general.
But God, I love this gosh darn site and it really hurts to tear myself away from it due to the constraints of school, sleep and work. If I could find a way to make one of those things go away, I would, but my body is building up a tolerance to the black coffee I pump into it 'round two in the morning, every morning. But hey, the sun is shining and life is amazing. I'm trying to put that in the forefront as I write this sad email. So I guess I'll just say I love you guys and carry on being amazing.
- Nancy
It'd been a long time since we had a teenage writer on staff — dating as far back to the time before Andie and DnaError hit their magical 2-0. We never made it a priority to get more teens on the staff, only to get the best writers we could find. For all her young years, Nancy ka-powed us with her insane writing skills and cheeky humor. She brought a bright light to the site, sunflowers and warm meadows and gummi worms wrapped into one package, and we're all the better for it.
In a mere two years, Nancy left her mark on MRFH. Whether it be her autobiography about how she became a mutant to one of the most awesome Batman movie viewings ever, she never left us bored — only wanting more.
We all wish Nancy the very best in her college years, and hope that she'll always look back on her time with MRFH as "that smelly place where they never paid me, but at least I got to vent about movies when I needed to the most."
Oh, Nancy. It feels like we barely got a chance to know you, and here you are leaving us. College is a seductive mistress. But because nobody walks away from MRFH without some lovely parting gifts, here are some of the things I'm going to miss about you:
You'd never seen Ghostbusters. That still blows my mind. Growing up in the 80s, it was literally impossible to avoid seeing Ghostbusters (I think it was an in-womb movie), and if there's any film I could go back in time and watch with fresh eyes, it would be this one. Getting to see it in a movie theater, at midnight, gives you exactly as many cool points as you lost for not having seen it in the first place.
You liked all the same stuff I did.Scrubs, Pete & Pete, Batman, Bill Murray? Spooky. I'm still not entirely convinced I wasn't suffering from insomnia and writing your stuff while I was "asleep." If so, go me! If not, though, congratulations on your excellent taste.
You stood up for Aquaman. In fact, what you specifically said was "But think of how lame Aquaman could have been, and look at what he is now." And you weren't being ironic. There's no faster way to a swimmer's heart.
Your awesome banner. Of the umpteen zillion banners PoolMan has drawn, there've been some great ones, but yours was the only one I looked at and thought, "Damn, why didn't *I* say I liked Super Mario?" Your fire flower will be sorely missed.
I'll be sorry to see you go, Nance. Don't be a stranger with the guest reviews, enjoy college (just don't do anything I wouldn't do… which leaves plenty of leeway), and always remember: Batman is the coolest superhero ever. You keep that in mind, you'll do just fine. Later, kiddo.
Nancy's Bio:
Nancy was born and raised in an adorable little valley in Western Massachusetts, filled with coffee freaks and diners. It was cute enough to maintain hometown sensibility with enough funky clothing stores to get that hipster feel. She is now a fully-functioning college student in an even smaller version of her hometown, except now she's a Maine resident (Making the transition from MA to ME is like the most exciting thing ever). There are a few things that are important to know about her, and then she'll be on her way : She drinks coffee constantly, Ben and Jerry are her best friends, she loves Super Mario World, and she is insane about color schemes and matching. Normally when asked about her personality, she just replies "Batman" and walks away. She spends her days exploring and adventuring with her friends (when it town), studying (when not) and watching Bill Murray movies and eating cereal (always).
