Justin does Stranger Than Fiction

Posted by Justin

The Scoop: 2006 PG-13, directed by Marc Forster and starring Will Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman & Emma Thompson.

Tagline: Harold Crick isn’t ready to go. Period.

Summary: Boring, dull, dreary guy starts to hear his life’s narrator… telling him he’s about to die.

Justin’s Rating: Is his appendix in the appendix?

Justin’s Review: I sometimes wonder if I might be a mere character in some warped person’s novel, probably in a Beginning Creative Writers Workshop or something. Then I realize how truly boring my non-superhero-related day is, and dismiss the thought along with a healthy belch.

Not so for Harold Crick (Will Farrell), an IRS agent who wakes up one morning to hear a female voice narrating his life. As she points out how ploddingly boring his life is, he’s forced to realize that he’s just a creation. Worse than that, he hears the writer foreshadow his oncoming death, which happens to be that author’s forte. Harold’s up poop crick, and without a bookmark. What to do? Where’s a thesaurus when you need one?

It’s an Interesting Idea. It leads into an Interesting Series of Unfortunate Events, some good, some bad, and some featuring Dustin Hoffman who is not only alive, but still looking spry for a 70-year-old who owes me $4.50 back for Sphere. Harold audits a cookie baker, he engages the help of an English professor to help him figure out his fictional status, and he goes on a short quest to meet his maker.

For an Interesting Idea, it doesn’t blossom into a Dryly Witty Comedy, or a Poignant Piece of Human Existentialism, or even Blades of Glory. It’s – and since Will Farrell is present, I cannot believe I’m saying this – a remarkably low-key tale that’s full of symbolic details of the sort film professors salivate over, but audiences ho and hum and glance at their watches. It’s as if someone took an excellent, imaginative short story, then padded it out to become a 500-page novel. I could see someone editing Stranger Than Fiction down into a ten-minute YouTube video, and retaining 100% of the relevant content.

With shades of Fight Club, The Neverending Story, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich abounding, this flick can’t even claim to be wholly original. Yet mutanty points are given to Will Farrell, for once, not banging on a cow bell; Emma Thompson for simply showing up; and 70-year-old Hoffman nipples. Yahoo.

Didja Notice?

  • Emma Thompson wore no makeup.
  • Harold watches Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life at one point.
  • The last names of all the characters (and the bus line and publishing firm names) are the names of famous mathematicians, scientists, engineers, artists, etc.
  • The movie makes several references to René Magritte’s painting “Son of Man”.
  • In the ending, where the Karen Eiffel is leaning on Professor’s Hilbert book case you can see that there are several books about cooking.
  • The film was shot in Chicago, at and around many local buildings and settings.

Groovy Quotes

Harold Crick: Yes. I am relieved to know that I am not a golem.

Harold Crick: This may sound like gibberish to you, but I think I’m in a tragedy.

Kay Eiffel: Well, Penny, like anything worth writing, it came inexplicably and without method.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack includes the original recording of the song that Harold plays for Ana, “(I’d Go The) Whole Wide World”.
  1. jon Said,

i liked the old trivia sections better. this one is just lacking. the different sections for quotes and trivia and other info were a lot better than this top-ten thing. i want more than ten.

  2. Sarah Said,

Where is the rating and the tagline and all the good stuff that used to come at the beginning?

  3. Rett Said,

I’m not a fan of the new look at all. It looks like any other movie review site now. Heck, it kinda looks like a news site layout. Course, I hate all change. I’m still looking for a way to revert the reviewers’ banners back to the older, BETTER ones.

  4. Justin Said,

As we’ve said, this is all very much a work in progress — we’re nowhere near our end result, this is all just stuff to test different looks and ideas out.

But hey, gotta love being able to comment under each review, eh?

  5. James Said,

Yeah, comment sections after reviews will be great. This is definitely not your grandpa’s MRFH, but it looks good. Keep up the great work!

  6. jon Said,

im glad you listened to me and put the different sections back in, but i’m counting and i still only see ten things there. i believe i said, “i want more than ten.” i bet you thought i wouldn’t notice if you took the numbers out, but i did! in your face!

  7. Anonymous Said,

    Cool

  8. Hilasophy Said,

Hey all, have a little faith. You’re talking to the man who gave us MRFH in the first place. I’m sure in time it will be just as glorious as the former version. Good luck Justin!

  9. Jeremiah Said,

    I like it!

  10. Sirgallad2 Said,

What happened to the mutant criteria? (cult, quotes, bizarre, Re-watchability) The new format is pretty ace and I do happen to like it. Losing the criteria takes away some of the fun of the whole thing. Nice new digs though. I’m still coming to this site first for my movie reviews.

  11. dex Said,

The site just started to mutate and it looks great already. Be patient!

@Sirgallad2: Justin announced in the following post that the Mutant Meter is probably gone. And I think we can do without it. The Mutants (each one of them) make a point of discussing the pros and cons of a movie, that’s what’s important. And numbers can’t convey that.

  12. Justin Said,

I don’t think we’re going to see the return of the Mutant Meter, but we may have a surprise or two down the road as a replacement.

  13. Taylor Said,

    Wait, wait, wait.

I need my “If you liked this movie, check these out” section. It’s my favorite part.
