The MRFH Revue 2008 – Courtney!

Posted by Justin

If I’m being perfectly honest with you, I have to say that 2008 was a magnificent year for movies. For the first time in quite a while, the Good far outweighed the Bad. Granted I didn’t see every movie that came out, but by this point I know to stay far away from titles like The Love Guru and Disaster Movie, and anyone who doesn’t deserves to pay 9 bucks to sit through that kind of trash. But for the more selective film-lover, the pickins were mighty fine.

The MRFH Revue 2008 – Lissa!

So, 2008, huh?

I have to be honest — a lot of 2008 was a blur to me. Granted, my big, life-changing event didn’t happen in 2008, it happened on December 14, 2007. That’s when T2 joined our family, depriving Duckie and I of sleep and bringing a heck of a lot of love to make up for it. A baby coming really wipes a year from your mind, and certainly wipes the time off your plate. But it was a good blur, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Just wish all my Mutant brethren could say the same thing. (::kicks Sue’s 2008. Hard::)

The MRFH Revue 2008 – Al!

I don’t like being wrong. I’m happy to say I can admit when I’ve screwed up, but it doesn’t make it any easier realizing that I’ve been on the wrong side of a fight or I’ve totally miscalculated something. Look back at 2008, I think I must admit that I was wrong.

Last January, with all of the bright, shiny possibilities for the year, I believe I actually said the words “2008 is going to be a fantastic year!” There were sequels and sequels and sequels to look forward to, like Rambo, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Batman, Star Trek, and Narnia. Interesting original projects were popping up like Tropic Thunder, Be Kind Rewind, Pineapple Express, Hancock, and Where in the World is Osama bin Laden? New stuff was in production from Kevin Smith, Spike Lee, Bryan Singer, Simon Pegg, and Pixar. It was a lot to look forward to, and I worked myself up into a frenzy over it.

The MRFH Revue 2008 – Kyle!

Perhaps due to a childhood head injury (my very first scar!), I have never manifested any kind of nostalgic longing for years past. I never understood it myself: I’m ‘half empty’ regarding nearly everything else, but remain convinced that each year has been better than the last and that this trend will continue . . . forever!

Looking back at the films released in 2008, I see a definite trend towards improving quality in films. Yes, I will admit that The Dark Knight and Iron Man certainly contribute mightily to the sense of an upward spiral, both being such massively entertaining and accomplished films that they skew the entire year towards perceived goodness. But for arguably meeting the astronomical expectations, they deserve the VIP status that comes with wrecking 2008’s bell curve of “awesomeness.” (NOTE: I don’t completely understand statistics or their applications, so there you go)

The MRFH Revue 2008 – Drew!

2008… it’s been an interesting year, to say the least. I’ll leave it to my fellow Mutants to talk about all the dying, instead veering toward the other end of the spectrum with the following advice: if you or your wife are planning on becoming pregnant, make sure the third trimester/due date are in the fall, winter, or early spring. I can’t stress that enough. I was lucky… through nearly the entire summer blockbuster season, my wife was feeling comparatively good and didn’t mind a quick jaunt to the theater. But once that due date starts being measured in days and weeks rather than months, you’d best lay in the Netflix subscription, my friends, because your ass? Not going anywhere.

The MRFH 2008 Revue – Heather!

Should past Hulk movies be forgot
And never brought to mind?
We’ll let Bale’s past transgressions slide
If we get another Dark Knight

The list of comic book movies this year,
Shows geeks will rule on high.
We’ll have a dose of Iron Man!
And pray Watchmen isn’t tripe!

The Closing of the Year

Posted by Justin

Today’s another construction day with the new site here — some things too little to mention, but we do have a new spiffy Viewings page for you to check out — and I didn’t want the year to end without a couple of things said.

The first is that, as always, I am extremely proud and grateful to be working alongside of terrific writers and friends that comprise the Mutant Reviewers staff. I constantly find myself shaking my head — how could we still be doing this after 11 years? — but then I realize that the answer really is relationships. Some of us come (it’s been terrific to have Heather and Courtney join us this year), some of us depart, but this site becomes a photo album for our lives and experiences that we share with each other.

The second is that I want to thank all of our readers — you! — from the bottom of my heart for continuing to read and support MRFH over the years. You guys keep us honest with error corrections, keep us busy with suggested movies to review, and keep us company in the forums with interesting and often bizarre discussions.

The question that gets asked, from time to time, is “How long will you guys be doing this?”

The answer: “As long as we can.”

Happy New Year from Mutant Reviewers From Hell!

Update on the Update

Posted by Justin

Hey all! I know, it’s pretty filthy around here, what with all the dust and dirt of our new construction. We appreciate your patience as we integrate the blog software into Mutant Reviewers — a lot of stuff is going on “under the hood” to lay a firm foundation for the plethora of updates to follow, but it may not look like much is happening from a cursory inspection of the site.

One of the reasons we’re doing this now is because the winter/Christmas break has freed up some time to make this transition — and also because many of our loyal readers will most likely be traveling or busy making cookies and saving Santa’s butt yet again. The plan is to get a *functional*, if not polished and finished, version of the site up and running by December 24, so that we can resume daily updates. That doesn’t mean we’ll be done by then — we have a LOT to do (MRFH contains 11 years of content that has to be sorted and indexed).
